From Surviving to Thriving: How Rachael Marie King Rewrote Her Story to Success
At just 14 years old, Rachael Marie King was already running a household. Before sunrise, she would wake up her father and sister, dress her infant brother, pack his diaper bag, and get everyone out the door. After school, she walked the children home, helped with homework, cooked dinner and prepared her mother’s meal before she left for a night shift. Amidst the weight of heavy adult responsibilities, school became Rachael’s sanctuary, a place where she could focus entirely on herself.
Despite her determination to stay in school, life presented severe obstacles. By her senior year of high school, Rachael became pregnant and was unable to finish. Seeking security for her daughter, she remained in an abusive relationship for years before moving to Montana and back to Texas.
In the years that followed, Rachael built a life grounded in service and community. Alongside her husband, she threw herself into raising their children, leading a local youth league, volunteering, and serving their church. When three neighboring children lost their parents to a drug overdose and personal obstacles, Rachael’s family opened their doors and adopted the three boys, growing their household to six children.
However, hardship returned when her husband struggled with substance abuse and Rachel began experiencing domestic violence. After enduring years of trauma and securing a lifetime protective order to keep her family safe, Rachael was granted a lifetime protective order and referred to SAFE Alliance (formerly SAFEPLACE) for counseling and food assistance. It was through that referral in 2011 that she first walked through the doors of Dress for Success Austin.
A Community of Support
When Rachael first connected with Dress for Success Austin, she found far more than career guidance. Meeting staff members like Mia Johns, she accessed interview prep, resume assistance, LinkedIn profile creation, and styling services. More importantly, she found a community that helped her realize she was allowed to want more for her life.
Although life’s disruptions and difficult circumstances temporarily drew her away, Rachael returned to Dress for Success Austin in 2024 determined to rebuild once again. She threw herself into every opportunity available—participating in the Entrepreneurship program, EmpowerHER, the Professional Women's Group, Her Valor, and wellness classes.
When financial hardships left her without basic utilities, the staff at Dress for Success Austin stepped in with immediate support, providing grocery gift cards and helping her secure a free laptop. That laptop proved to be a vital stepping stone for her next chapter: higher education.
Breaking Generational Curses
At age 55, Rachael enrolled in college. Through hard work and resilience, she graduated with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Business Management, earning a 3.5 GPA, making the Dean’s List five times, and gaining induction into the National Honor Society. She became the first person in her family to earn a college degree.
By overcoming several obstacles, Rachael has modeled resilience for her children, including her non-verbal autistic son, Austin, who lives with her today. She has shown them that it is possible to break generational cycles and reshape one's future regardless of past trauma.
The Next Chapter
Today, Rachael is stepping into the future on her own terms. She is currently launch-ready to start her own business and plans to give back to the organization that supported her journey. Her goal is to welcome the next woman who walks through the doors of Dress for Success Austin and remind her that it is never too late to begin again.
Rachael’s journey demonstrates that holistic support, ranging from professional clothing and mentorship to emergency assistance and community, can transform a life from survival into long-term success. Through determination and the support of a dedicated community, Rachael Marie King has reclaimed her narrative and redefined what comes next.
